As an independent foundation, the FZI Research Center for Information Technology has stood for applied cutting-edge research in computer science and its application fields for over 40 years. The FZI researches and develops innovations for the benefit of society, either through direct commissions from companies or in collaborative projects. In addition to the rapid transfer of research results to business, administration, and society, its central task is the training and further education of future specialists and executives for the digital transformation. The FZI is an innovation partner of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

Transport logistics for hospitals
With the MediCar 4.0 research project, the foundations for the automated transport logistics of the future in hospitals are being established. The goal is to make transport processes more efficient through the intelligent networking of electric vehicles, robotics, technical infrastructure, and software solutions, and to sustainably relieve the burden on hospital staff.
Innovative control and logistics concepts are being developed in the project and tested directly in hospitals. Thus, MediCar 4.0 makes an important contribution to the digitalization and automation of clinical processes and creates the prerequisites for a future-proof, resource-efficient, and networked hospital logistics system.
Behavioral therapeutic AI toy
With the VINNIE research project, an innovative therapy approach is being developed for children waiting for psychosomatic treatment. At the core of the project is the combination of a digital learning platform and an intelligent cuddly toy that supports children in their daily lives in learning and applying coping strategies.
Using biosignals and AI-based methods, the system recognizes stress situations and provides targeted therapeutic impulses. The goal is to close the care gap before treatment, strengthen children's mental health, and open up new digital pathways for behavioral therapeutic support.
Intelligent robot systems
At the ROBDEKON competence center, intelligent robot systems and AI methods are being developed for use in hazardous and hard-to-access environments. The goal is to relieve people working in contaminated, explosion-hazardous, or collapse-prone areas and to minimize risks to humans and the environment.
To achieve this, autonomous ground and aerial robot systems are used, which can capture their surroundings, detect hazards, and support decontamination measures. The developed technologies make an important contribution to civil security and enable the safe use of robotics in hostile environments.
Artificial Intelligence
From AI-supported mobility solutions to intelligent sensor systems and robotics, as well as applications in medicine, energy, and the environment: the innBW institutes successfully bring artificial intelligence into practice. With innovative technologies, they create the foundation for more efficient processes, well-founded decisions, and new digital applications—from the automated analysis of complex data to the intelligent support of humans and machines.
A special focus is on the development of trustworthy and application-oriented solutions. The institutes combine excellent research with the requirements of business, society, and regulation, and particularly support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in introducing and using AI. This results in practice-oriented innovations that shape digital transformation and sustainably strengthen competitiveness.
